In response to whistleblower testimonials revealed by The Arizona Republic exposing staffing and safety issues throughout the Arizona Division of Corrections, lawmakers have demanded entry to state prisons and can start touring amenities this week.

Three state representatives, Kelli Butler, Mitzi Epstein, and Melody Hernandez wrote a letter to Arizona Division of Corrections Director David Shinn final week alerting him of their plans to examine the Eyman jail in Florence on the morning of August 29.

The demand letter, dated Aug. 25, adopted allegations from individuals who stay and work in Arizona prisons that understaffing and safety failures had been instantly contributing prisoner deaths and an unsafe working setting.

“We’re very involved about current information experiences associated to our jail system and the Arizona Division of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry,” the legislators wrote. ”Our biggest issues contain the therapy of inmates in a number of settings and points associated to staffing. We consider it’s our obligation as state legislators to research the security of inmates and employees and to look at packages funded by Arizona taxpayers.”
